Moto Guzzi 1981

Over a period fo 6 month I restored a Moto Guzzi V35 II from 1981. It was abandoned. Standing for over 8 years on a backyard without protection from the sun or the rain.

It had 17948km and was given me for free. But I was not sure if the engine is still working. Before I could test it, the carbonizer needed a ultrasonic cleaning.

After that I was able to start it for the first time:

So I was sure, that the engine was running, the real work began. Which meant, that nearly the whole bike needed to be disassembled, cleaned and faulty parts replaced or updated.

A what was done:

  • replacing the old rubber brake lines with steel flex
  • repaired the old brake cylinders
  • replaced the old ignition system with an electric one
  • replacing the rusty tank
  • put on a new coverage for the sattle
  • replaced the tires
  • new speedometer drive snail
  • welding of the exhausts
  • new brake pads
  • replace bearings
  • repaint
  • etc.

After that I could get a new licenced plate and travel around with.

The great thing about this “old” motorcycle is: I can repair nearly everything with standard tools by myself. This is not possible with a newer motorcylce, you need special equipment for every brand. For example; to refill oil at a BMW you need a special tool

The things, that I do not enjoy are: It consumes more gasoline than anticipated (5,5l/100km). It is loud after 80km, because the engine revs very high and the gears are short.

Overall I’m still very happy with the V35. I would love to convert it to electric later on.
